Ecology Study No.1 (2023)

Pen, Pencil, Digital and AI, 28.4 x 28.4 cm

During long daytime and evening walks through the University of Manchester Science and Engineering campus, a place where old lecture halls and centres of learning collide with modern architecture and ‘green’ masterplanning, I contemplated the very essence of our built environment - a place where nature and man-made forces are both in tension and harmony.

At this particular moment in time I was compelled to create a drawing to clearly illustrate this tension - combining the soft, amorphous forms of nature with the clean, hard, colourless edges of manmade industry.

The original drawing is rendered in pencil and traced over with fineline pen, before scanning and cleaning up. In Photoshop, colouring and shadows are added to the forms. To push the theme of man-made vs nature further, Artificial Intellegence (AI) was asked to interpret the drawing, with a view to expanding the canvas around the edges. The results are combined to create a seamless blend between the original hand drawing and AI generated visual assets.
